The Truth We Deny

By Desmond Yeoh SC

As we grow older, one Truth will slowly dawn upon us; NOTHING IN THIS MATERIAL WORLD CAN BRING LASTING HAPPINESS; EVERYTHING CONTAINS SEEDS OF SUFFERING.

This Truth is difficult to accept because it is more structured if we can delude ourselves to think that happiness can be found in wealth, success and power. We just need to work hard, get a good education, climb up the corporate ladder, find our soul mate and one day, we will be happy ever after. If we cannot find happiness in a good career and family, how else can we find happiness?

So, we continue to deny this Truth and refuse to think about it too much because if we think too deeply, the foundations of our delusions will begin to crumble.

But as we progress on our spiritual evolution, this Truth will be like a black spot on a white wall. We cannot help but see it. In fact, we cannot avoid seeing it. Even if we close our eyes, we will continue to see the black spot.

There is really nothing to fear because this Truth is not depressing. It is really quite liberating. When we recognise this Truth, we are able to truly “let go” of our attachments. We become better at going with the flow instead of trying to control our environment. We become like the river which flows around the rocks instead of fighting with them. The Divine knows what is good for us; so why not give the Divine the free hand to guide our life.

Our love for our loved ones will grow because our love for them will become unconditional. We are able to let go of our expectations about how they should be and accept them for how they are. We focus more on their strengths instead of their weaknesses. And as we change, they do too. They also become better human beings.

So let us not avoid realising this Truth. Let us embrace it.
